Child Autism Side Effect: New Basis for Paxil Lawsuit

Antidepressant like Paxil has been implicated in various severe and life-altering side effects, according to medical reports from users and clinical trials.  In July 2011, the Cable News Network (CNN) reported that among the dangerous effects ofantidepressants that arose is the possible risk for autism in a child. A research conducted by Lisa Croen, Ph.D., director of autism research at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, found that infants who were exposed to antidepressants during the first trimester of their mother's pregnancy were four times likely to develop a disorder on the autism spectrum (ASD) compared to those who were not exposed to the drug.

As was implied in recent data, people suffering from depression should consider another way of treatment other than taking Paxil, which has been continuously blamed for causing unpleasant side effects. Apart from the studies and clinical trials, reports from Paxil users claimed that the drug caused critical damage on their lives especially on their health. These reports are manifested through the Paxil lawsuits charged against GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the manufacturing company of Paxil.

Paxil has been the target of court charges for causing numerous harm to patients such as insomnia, birth defects, hallucination, abnormal personality changes, unusual mood shifts, psychosis, hostility, agitation, self-harm, suicide and other acts of violence.

Numerous Paxil lawsuits have been charged against its manufacturer to recover damages for those who committed suicide while using Paxil.  The litigations contend that GSK failed to warn the public about the dangers of taking Paxil. There was one class action in California that charged the company of concealing the information about Paxil side effects from the public. The company was further accused by US governmental entities of illegally interfering with the release of a generic version of Paxil. This caused other states to pay more for the antidepressant drug in their health programs.

Hence, victims of Paxil should seek legal advice to determine if they qualify for a financial compensation from the manufacturer. Paxil Birth Defects Warning Came A Little Too Late

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had first issued a warning to healthcare professionals and patients about Paxil’s potential to cause birth defects among newborns of mothers who took the drug during their first trimester, in December 2005. Because the FDA had already approved Paxil for public consumption 12 years ago in 1993, the warning may have come a little too late. The history of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which manufactured Paxil, is littered with lawsuits and settlements. Paxil’s newly found side effects of birth defects could be GSK’s another chapter of entanglement with the law.

Becoming one of the mostly prescribed drugs since its approval in 1993, Paxil or Paroxetine is an antidepressant which belongs to a group of medication known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). First given the pregnancy category C classification by the FDA, it is not then surprising that the drug would be prescribed to some pregnant women who are prone to depression. However, its classification was elevated to pregnancy category D, which means there is human evidence of risk to infants, after medical studies have started linking Paxil to an increased risk of birth defects which eventually prompted FDA to issue a warning in 2005, only 12 years after it was first approved for public consumption.

One could just imagine the number of pregnant women who were prescribed the drug in the last 12 years and how many of them could have given birth to malformed newborns and never knowing their medication was responsible for it. The most common birth defect is a heart defect in the baby; however, premature births and a serious condition where there is not enough oxygen in the baby's blood have also been reported by women who took Paxil during the first trimester of their pregnancy, according to the FDA. Women who took SSRIs during their third trimester were six times more likely to deliver babies born with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) than those who didn't take SSRIs during their third trimester, based on a study by the New England Journal of Medicine.

A study from Sweden found that birth defects were twice as common among Paxil users as among women taking other antidepressants or none at all. There are other reported side effects of Paxil but the birth defects could be its worst because of its potential to harm innocent newborns. In 2003, the FDA had also issued a warning to healthcare professionals on reports of the occurrence of suicidal tendencies in clinical trials for various antidepressant drugs including Paxil in pediatric patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Glaxo had to pay out more than $2 billion to resolve prior litigation, according to Bloomberg, over claims that Paxil caused suicides and withdrawal from the drug. Several Paxil lawsuits are continued to be filed in relation to its newly found birth defect side effects, this time around.
